IRAN - Five more journalistes arrested

Without Borders expressed its "extreme concern" over the arrest this
weekend by Iranian authorities of five more journalists.
"We are very worried", Reporters Without Borders secretary-general
Robert Ménard said, "not only because fourteen journalists have been
arrested by Iranian authorities within the last month - a sad record in the
history of this country - but also because the five new arrests bring to
twenty-two the number of journalists presently imprisoned in Iran".
"Our concern is all the more poignant", he noted, "given the
extremely obscure circumstances of the hospitalisation and death of Zahra
Kazemi and how they have contributed to creating a climate of fear for all
journalistes working in Iran."
The requests for clarification made by Reporters Without Borders to Iranian
authorities have never received the slightest reply. "We welcome with
satisfaction the declarations of President Khatami who expressed regret and
concern after the death of Zahra Kazemi and ordered an investigation into
the circumstances of her death. But that is not enough to make us forget the
repression which Iranian journalists are faced with", Robert Ménard added.
"This is why we ask that the Iranian regime authorize Reporters Without
Borders to carry out an enquiry mission into the situation of the freedom of
the press in Iran and into the circumstances of the death of Zahra
Kazemi".
Also, Reporters Without Borders reiterated its call on the Iranian authorities
to grant the family's wish to repatriate the body to Canada, where she lived.
On 11 and 12 July, Hossein Bastani, Vahid Ostad-Pour and Said
Razavi Faghi, all three editors of the reformist daily Yass-e No, as
well as Chahram Mohamadi-Nia, director of the weekly Vaght (The
Moment), were summoned before Tehran state prosecutor, Said Mortazavi, before
being imprisoned.
Yass-e No had published, on 10 July, an article explaining that its editors had
prepared a complete edition on the demonstrations of 9 July but had received
orders from the Intelligence ministry not to print it.
Mohamadi-Nia, who was accused of publishing "impure photo and
article", was incarcerated as he was unable to pay a bail of 100 million
rials (11,000 euros). As for Said Razavi Faghi, he was arrested at his home,
whereas the independent journalist Arash Salehi was arrested in the
streets of Tehran.
Ensafali Hedayat, a journalist for Salam, was freed on 12 July,
after spending 27 days in an individual cell at the central prison of Tabriz.

Cinq nouvelles arrestations de journalistes
Reporters
sans frontières exprime sa plus vive inquiétude à la suite de l'arrestation de
cinq nouveaux journalistes par les autorités iraniennes ce week-end.
"Nous sommes très inquiets car ces cinq dernières arrestations portent à
vingt-deux le nombre de journalistes emprisonnés en Iran. Quatorze journalistes
ont été arrêtés en l'espace d'un mois. C'est un triste record dans l'histoire
de ce pays", a martelé Robert Ménard, secrétaire général de
l'organisation. "Notre préoccupation est d'autant plus forte que les
conditions pour le moins obscures de l'hospitalisation et de la mort de
Zahra Kazemi participent à créer un climat de peur pour tous les reporters
travaillant en Iran", a-t-il ajouté.
Les demandes d'éclaircissement aux autorités iraniennes formulées par Reporters
sans frontières sont restées lettre morte. "Nous accueillons avec
satisfaction les déclarations du président Khatami, qui a exprimé son regret et
son inquiétude après la mort de Zahra Kazemi et ordonné une enquête sur les
circonstances de son décès. Mais cela ne suffit pas pour autant à faire oublier
la répression à laquelle se heurtent les journalistes iraniens", a affirmé
Robert Ménard, avant d'ajouter : "C'est pourquoi nous demandons au régime
iranien d'autoriser Reporters sans frontières à mener une enquête sur l'état de
la liberté de la presse dans le pays et sur les circonstances qui ont conduit à
la mort de Zahra Kazemi".
L'organisation a réitéré sa demande aux autorités iraniennes d'accéder à la
demande de la famille de Zahra Kazemi qui souhaite que le corps de la défunte
soit rapatrié au Canada.
Les 11 et 12 juillet, Hossein Bastani, Vahid Ostad-Pour et
Said Razavi Faghi, tous trois membres de la rédaction du quotidien
réformateur Yass-é No, ainsi que Chahram Mohamadi-Nia, directeur
de l'hebdomadaire Vaght (Moment), ont été convoqués chez le procureur
général de Téhéran, Said Mortazavi, avant d'être emprisonnés. Le journal
Yass-é No avait publié, le 10 juillet, un article expliquant que la
rédaction avait préparé un dossier complet sur les manifestations du 9 juillet
mais avait reçu l'ordre du ministère des Renseignements de ne pas le publier.
Mohamadi-Nia, accusé d'avoir publié "une photo et un article
impropre", a été incarcéré faute d'avoir pu payer une caution de 100
millions de rials (soit 11 000 euros). Said Razavi Faghi a été interpellé à son
domicile, tandis que le journaliste indépendant Arash Salehi a été
arrêté dans les rues de Téhéran.
Ensafali Hedayat, journaliste à Salam, a quant à lui été libéré
le 12 juillet, après avoir passé vingt-sept jours en cellule individuelle à la
prison centrale de Tabriz.
