Following are initial reports from Mar. 5 Anti-War Moratorium local actions. Please send in a report on your activity: MARCH 5 ANTI-WAR MORATORIUM DAY GENERATES STUDENT WALK-OUTS, ANTI-WAR TEACH-INS & WORKPLACE LEAFLETING... ANTI-WAR ACTIVITIES ACROSS COUNTRY HELP BUILD FOR NEXT NATIONAL MASS MARCHES IN WASHINGTON & SAN FRANCISCO ON MARCH 15! Students, workers and others in the Bay Area and across the country participated in a National Moratorium Against the War today, with activities ranging from walkouts and rallies to anti-war teach-ins, workplace leafleting against the war, and civil disobedience. This morning banners protesting the war could be seen over Bay Area freeways. "The Bush administration is about to carry out a high tech slaughter. This is a state of emergency for the whole world and we can't just carry out business as usual. I walked out of school today to say - 'No War On Iraq!'" said Natalie Alsop, a student at City College of San Francisco. One student at City College, Chris Kendricks was arrested. He had been encouraging students to walk out using a bullhorn. An administrator asked him for his student I.D. and he said he would leave. As he walked through the faculty parking lot in front of the Admissions and Records Building student witnesses say he was tackled by two campus police officers. Kendricks went limp and is being held for resisting arrest. San Francisco State University students rallied on campus then blocked traffic on 19th Avenue in the afternoon. Hundreds of San Francisco high school students walked out and marched around San Francisco through Civic Center Plaza, the tourist hub at Powell and Market and by Justin Herman Plaza. Many carried signs and passed out flyers for the upcoming Mar. 15 march. In Oakland, hundreds of students walked out, marched and then rallied at Frank Ogawa Plaza in front of City Hall. A few arrests were reported in Oakland. One arrestee is the educational reporter from the New Bay View Newspaper, an African American newspaper in San Francisco. Berkeley High students held a rally at Martin Luther King park with hundreds of students. Seniors at Arroyo High School walked out to protest war. Their principal, Richard Lloyd, has revoked their senior "privileges" and is barring them from walking in the graduation ceremony. Everyone is encouraged to call Principal Lloyd at (510) 427-3873, email him at dlloyd@slzusd.org, and fax him at (510) 317-9067 to demand the punishment is revoked and support the students' rights to protest the genocidal war on Iraq. San Jose State University students were joined by local high school students and students from nearby Notredame College. The San Jose students then marched to the City Council where a resolution to denounce the war was being taken up. Sonoma State University students also walked out and rallied against the war. Petaluma High School students walked out and blocked a main street in front of their school. Walk outs also took place at California State University Sacramento. At UCLA where students protested at the Federal Building across from their campus. Walk outs also occurred at twelve other Los Angeles schools. UC Santa Barbara had a walk out and rally of thousands of students. Activists across the Bay Area are also feverishly preparing for the March 15 National Mass March Against the War. The March 15 rally in San Francisco will gather at 11 am at Civic Center Plaza for a rally and march. It is co-sponsored by the International A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) Coalition, United for Peace & Justice; Bay Area United Against War; Not In Our Name Project; Vanguard Foundation & Vanguard Alliance; U.S. Labor Against the War; Bay Area Vets for Peace and many others. Activists are also preparing for emergency response protests if the war breaks out in the next two weeks. If war breaks out, in San Francisco people will walk-out of school & work or leave home and meet at Civic Center at 12 noon, and at Powell & Market Streets at 5 pm.
